If you’re interested in a great family event to usher in the holiday season, here’s the date to save. The Iowa Youth Chorus will present its annual Candy Cane Concert on December 8, 2012 at 4 pm Saturday at the First Christian Church, 2500 University Avenue,.

The altar will be filled with 190 children, ranging in age from 6 to 18, performing in seven different choirs. Singing a variety of holiday music, audiences will hear a sampling from the advanced choirs as well as a rousing finale that includes all choir members.

“All our singers have practiced relentlessly to ensure this concert reaches out with uplifting messages of the season. It’s a joy to lead them through their music,” said Iowa Youth Chorus Artistic/Executive Director Kristen Stanton.

“We also have a special guest performer, Des Moines professional storyteller, Maureen Korte. After gathering stories and genres from her world wide travels she translates them into a wealth of multi-media tales that include sign language, pantomime, costume, accent, dialogue, paper cutting and folding and puppets.”

Korte has chosen three stories for the concert. They include The Snowflake Story, The Felling of the Christmas Tree and The Season of Giving. The Felling of the Christmas Tree is interactive and includes choir members as characters.

Shop Early at the Silent Auction

The concert will be preceded by the Candy Cane Concert Silent Auction which begins at 1:30 pm.

This afternoon auction provides an opportunity for concertgoers to stop by early and shop for a good cause while enjoying seasonal cookies and hot chocolate. Among the auction items are a hand made quilt, created from scraps of former Iowa Youth Chorus uniform fabric and a YMCA annual membership, for a family of four, valued at $950.

This concert is the end cap of an 8-day tour to Italy in June, 2012. The thirty five combined Chamber Singers/Chorale choir performed for the noon mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican and for another mass at St. Francis Basilica, Assisi. They also presented full concerts at St. Eustachio, Rome, Chiesa dello Spirito Santo, Prato, and San Giovanni Elemosinario, Venice.

Tickets will be available at the door for this concert. Adult tickets are $10.00, children 3-18 at $5.00.

The nonprofit Iowa Youth Chorus was founded in 1981 to encourage and foster a life long love of music in children. Through classes for all ages, from early childhood through high school, the Chorus inspires personal development, celebrates diversity and fosters international goodwill. As the premier youth choral organization of central Iowa, young singers come from every suburb and surrounding communities including Ankeny, Des Moines, West Des Moines, Windsor Heights, Newton and Pella.
What began as Sunday afternoon rehearsals in a downtown auditorium has touched the lives of thousands of children, youth and adults – not just in Central Iowa but around the world.
