Beginnings: Our Graduates

Beginnings lays the foundation for further musical endeavors. Many of our graduates continue to be involved in music making by joining the Iowa Youth Chorus or with instrumental study. Here is what some of them have been up to:

Annika Baker

Beginnings graduate and Iowa Youth Chorus member, 9, recently played the part of Gretl VonTrapp in the Des Moines Playhouse production of “The Sound of Music”.

Taylor Altemeier

Taylor graduated from Beginnings in May of 2006 when he was in fourth grade, having completed the two-year program “Music Makers at the Keyboard.” In fifth grade, he began playing clarinet in concert band and quickly secured first chair.

The following year Taylor was selected to be a member of the All District Sixth Grade Honor Band. Students included represented eight elementary schools. In seventh grade, he added the alto saxophone and began playing in jazz band along with clarinet in concert band. He earned a 1+ at the SCIBA Solo and Ensemble Contest. In eighth grade, Taylor earned an elite spot in the SCIBA Honor Band. He also earned a position in the 2010 Iowa Bandmasters All-Iowa eighth grade Honor Band.

He was one of four Valley Southwoods students who auditioned for the 2010 All-State Band and was selected, one of a very small number of ninth grade students selected from across the state.

In October, 2011, Taylor auditioned and was accepted for the All-State Band for the second year. Because Taylor made All-State, he applied and was accepted by the Central Iowa Youth Band to participate in a musical exchange and tour of China in summer of 2012.

Christopher Altemeier

Christopher completed Music Makers at the Keyboard in May of 2009 when he was in second grade. During third and fourth grade he continued his music by taking private piano lessons. This year, as a fifth grader, he began playing alto saxophone. He enjoyed playing a solo at the fifth grade “First Performance-Demonstration Concert”!

Sam – now 8 years old, attended Beginnings from 18 months through age 6. At the time he left the program, he decided not to go forward with keyboard. Since then he has taken up piano lessons (locally). He thinks he wants to be a song writer when he grows up. He is currently working on children’s song lyrics. He always enjoyed the singing and movements – he learned that music can be fun and inspiring.

We love our children! For their safety, we have cancelled the rest of the 2019 - 2020 season. Read more about how IYC is responding to coronavirus concerns HERE
