Our annual Spring Sing concert marked the end of our 2012-2013 performing season. The repertoire included songs of Iowa, the US and Latin America. As always, we concluded the concert by singing our signature song, Blessing.

Highlights From 2012 Performances

Synergy Concert

February 2012

Concert Choir, Chorale and Chamber Singers collaborated with the Des Moines Symphony Academy for our annual Synergy Concert (synergy = combined effort being greater than the parts). The Academy’s Honors String Quartet shared the performance, and accompanied the choir for Mozart’s Ave Verum and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Talented musicians (vocal and instrumental) combined forces to create great art and joyfull music.

Italy Tour

June 2012

Iowa Youth Chorus traveled to Italy in June of 2012 for an 8-day tour. Thirty-five singers and 16 adults landed in Rome on June 15. The next morning they sang for the noon mass at St. Peter’s Basilica – what an experience! The combined Chamber Singers/Chorale choir also presented full concerts at St. Eustachio in Rome, Chiesa dello Spirito Santo in Prato, and San Giovanni Elemosinario in Venice. Additional music performance highlights were provided for mass at St. Francis Basilica in Assisi. VIEW PHOTOS

Voces 8 Concert

October 2012

Chamber Singers had the rare opportunity to rub shoulders with professional singers by collaborating with Voces 8, a British, international award-winning octet that performs a wide range of music. The event was sponsored by Grand View University and included a master class in which IYC singers received instruction and feedback from members of the octet. In addition, our choir was invited to serve as the “warm-up act” for the concert that evening, together with the Grand View University Choir. Many thanks to Grand View for inviting us to participate in this event!

Highlights From 2011 Performances

A Prairie SongBurst

May 2011

Ye-haw!! A great time was had by all when our Children’s Chorus and Outreach Choirs performed for opening day at Living History Farms. IYC prepared a special presentation of songs, poetry, readings and even a square dance on the theme of “songs of the prairie.” Our performance location was the historic Flynn Barn on the LHF grounds, and in between our two performances the singers and their families had the opportunity to tour the farm. Another great collaboration with a central Iowa cultural organization!

World Food Prize Ceremony

October 2011

Once again, the Iowa Youth Chorus was invited to perform the finale for the World Food Prize Ceremony, broadcast live on IPTV. Chorale and Chamber Singers performed All This Joy, a John Denver favorite of Norman Borlaug, founder of the World Food Prize. Collaboration on the finale with world-renowned opera star and native Iowan, Simon Estes, added an extra special note to his wonderful evening. VIEW PHOTOS

Candy Cane Concert

December 2011

The IYC annual Candy Cane Concert features our younger choirs – Primary Choir, Children’s Chorus, and the Newton and Pella Outreach Choirs. In 2011 we collaborated with the Des Moines Symphony Flute Choir, directed by IYC board member Anne Stein. We performed two pieces together, combining flutes and choirs: Cantique de Noel (O Holy Night) and Frosty the Snowman. VIEW PHOTOS

Highlights From 2010 Performances

Iowa Energy Game

February 2010

Each year the Iowa Youth Chorus is invited to perform the National Anthem for an Iowa Energy basketball game. This is a fun family activity, and the opportunity to perform is extended to all of our singers from age 6 to 18. A great inter-generational event for all!

Spring Sing

April 2010

Our culminating event each year is the Spring Sing, a showcase of all our choirs. Our finale was We are the World, made popular by Michael Jackson and re-recorded in 2010. A few weeks before the concert singers were asked to collect spare change to donate to UNICEF. While singing the finale a power point presentation was shown featuring children from all over the world and all walks of life. As always, we concluded the concert by singing our signature song, Blessing.

Quebec Tour

June 2010

Chamber Singers participated in the Loto-Quebec Music Festival in Quebec, Canada. The choir performed concerts at Centre-Montmarte (Quebec City), Eglise Sainte-Rose (Laval), and at Notre Dame Basilica and St. Joseph Oratory (Montreal). Highlights included the performance of Carmina Burana in a massed choir and with the Laval Symphony Orchestra – complete with fireworks! VIEW PHOTOS
